History

The following was put together from the data we have available by Frank Cann, P.E. and submitted to national for their upcoming 50th Anniversary. A historian, as such, was never designated, so we have no chronological background to draw from.

SFPE, CAROLINAS CHAPTER

March,1974 A meeting was held consisting of interested parties from Insurance, Consulting, Fire Protection Contractors/ Manufacturers and local Code Officials to consider the formation of a Carolinas Chapter. From what I can determine, it appears that this was more or less spearheaded by Bill McNeary and Jack Woycheese. It was agreed by all parties to set up a Carolinas Chapter and By- Laws were quickly drawn up and with approval from National. The chapter was chartered on February 18,1975 with the following Charter Members:

Neal Allen
Brian Doyle
William Klutz
Jack Mobley
George Payne
Patrick Turner
Lewis Webb
James Armstrong
Joseph Hankins
William Lawrence
William Molyneux
Leonard Saylor
Dexter Vaughn
John Woycheese
Clifton Baucom
Frank Harkey
W.J.L. McNeary
Calvin Morrow
William Stringer
Thomas Waller

It is interesting to note that eight of the original members became chapter presidents.

Communications:

The Chapter has a Newsletter, "THE SPARK", from time to time depending on the interest and dedication someone had to devote to it. Bill McNeary started out about 1979 and produced a semi-annual issue for about 3 years until health conditions interfered. In 1988 Ed Watson made an attempt to revive it but again work load caused him to give it up after two issues. In 1992 the Chapter voted to start it up again, and under four Co-editors, Ed Watson, Frank Cann, Buford Lovett and Dennis Mc Dermott, put out quarterly issues starting in that fall. We continued until the fall of 1997 when, again, job responsibilities took over and as it stands right now we are waiting for some one to step up and volunteer to take over. 1996, mostly, through the efforts of Buford Lovett and Tim Shytle the chapter set up a Web Page through Charlottes Web at www.charweb.org/organizations/sfpe/sfpehp.htm. This web site was lost in late 1999 do to the shut down of Charlottes Web and waning interest. The new web site www.carolinasfpe.com was created in February 2002 with the push of Bill Lamay, and the technical help of Buford Lovett. The latest edition of the website is www.sfpecarolinas.org including a separate mail list server and was implemented in September 2002 under the direction of Mike Dacey.

If you have additional information to fill in some of the voids or,
to correct that already presented, e-mail Frank Cann Jr.
